Project - Brian C. Thomas Memorial Pollinator Garden at Wescott Beach State Park

Nate "Moose" Matteson, began his scouting career in kindergarten at Mannsville Manor Elementary in 2006. He joined Cub Scout Pack 37. Nate enjoyed a very active time in cub scouts. He earned the highest award in cub scouting, Arrow of Light, in 2012. He crossed over into Boy Scout Troop 37 in 2012. On July 1 2013, Nate and several other scouts founded Boy Scout Troop 586.

Nate served in a variety of leadership positions, including, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Order of the Arrow Representative, Trainer and now Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.
Nate served as chairperson of the 2015 Tri-Rivers District Camporee.
​
Mr. Matteson was the first scout from Troop 586 to attend National Youth Leadership Training. Every year since he has been invited back to serve as an instructor in the course.
Nate has also served as lead instructor for the Longhouse Council Scouting University, Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops Course for two years.

In 2016, Nate was recognized, along with one of his fellow scouts, by New York State Senator Patty Ritchie for coming to the aid of 150 people stranded in a winter snow storm while they were sheltered at the Adams Volunteer Fire Department. He helped make sandwiches and boy scout baked beans to feed the stranded motorists. He was also recognized in 2017 by the Northern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross with their “Real Heroes” award for helping a friend’s dad, who experienced a serious health issue. Nate’s scout training helped him remain calm, care for and summon help for the father.

During his scouting career, Nate has traveled to Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland on a variety of scouting trips.
​
In 2017 Nate worked with Region 6 of the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to design and build a Pollinator Garden at the entrance of Wescott Beach State Park. Nate designed a 1,700 square feet garden of over 2,000 native pollinator plants. The garden is designed to provide suitable resting and feeding habitat for birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles, but especially pollinator species. Pollinators are animals that feed on nectar and pollin and as they travel from plant to plant, they fertilize the plants and help maintain the ecosytem. Prior to the installation of the garden, the site was a grass desert. There were 497 hours of service provided in building the garden. Nate has dedicated the garden to Brian C. Thomas, Capital Facilities Manager for NYS Parks Region 6 and a Professional Licensed Engineer. Brian helped Nate spearhead the project but passed away suddenly as the project was starting.
